“What Are the Trees For?”

The idea for this comic came a real experience I had with my children. One day at the park they created an awesome “fortress” in a small tree/shrub. The fortress consisted of a few sticks, some pine boughs and lots and lots of pine cones. But in their fantasy game it was a lofty treetop castle that needed defending at all costs. To my surprise, a park ranger approached and told them they had to get out of the tree. When I asked why (they weren’t hurting the tree in any way and they were only about 2 feet from the ground--perfectly safe), she answered, “Kids can’t play in the trees here.” The kids abandoned their castle, but I thought to myself, “If they can’t play in the trees at the park, where can they play in the trees? And what are parks for, exactly, if not interacting with nature?"

The World

Trackers Kids live in two worlds: the real world and the world they create in their imaginations. Whether that’s a treetop nursery for baby dragons, becoming secret agents, or a prehistoric mammoth hunt, Trackers kids have rich fantasy worlds they inhabit. Re-entry from the imaginary to real world is not always easy.

The Characters

Trackers Kids have wild imaginations, but they also have mad Trackers skills. They can track, hunt, build a fire and survive in the wilderness. They are a band of friends united by their love of nature and their thirst for adventure. The rotating cast of characters are:

savanah

Savanah

Savanah is great at all the wilderness survival skills (carving, tracking, archer).

Josh

Josh

Josh is the quiet leader of the group. He appreciates great adventures and action.

frank

Frank

Frank is all about story.

fiona

Fiona

Fiona is a bit of a trouble-maker, always spoiling for a fight. She’s independent and likes to do things her way.
